Essential Items & Winter Support · Birmingham & Sandwell
Everyday essentials.
Extraordinary kindness.
A uniform that fits. Food for the table. A warm coat for the journey. Little Lights CIC brings people together to help families access the everyday items that matter, with care and dignity.
Behind every need is a family doing their best.
When money runs short, ordinary purchases can become difficult decisions. A parent wants their child to feel ready for school, to have enough to eat and to stay warm. They also want room in the family budget for the next unexpected expense.
Little Lights recognises the effort families make to keep going. Our school uniform distributions and household support through partner programmes have shown us the value of practical help made possible by donors, volunteers and collaborations.
Providing essentials can ease an immediate pressure and help children and young people take part in everyday life. It is one way our community can give families breathing space while wider support and opportunities develop.
Your donation is more than an item. It can be one less worry for a family.
The need behind the numbers.
Recent national research shows why access to essentials matters. These figures describe UK circumstances, rather than Little Lights’ own beneficiaries.
Data checked October 2026. Each figure has its own reporting period and measure.
- 27%of UK children lived in households with relative low income after housing costs in 2024/25.Source: DWP, Households Below Average Income, published March 2026. Read the official data.
- 14%of UK children lived in food-insecure households in 2024/25.Source: the same DWP release. Food insecurity means a risk of, or lack of access to, sufficient and varied food.
- 69%of households in the poorest fifth were going without essentials in October 2025, according to JRF’s UK Poverty 2026 report. This describes the lowest-income fifth, not all UK households. Read the JRF report.
Small things. Meaningful support.
We want to build on our practical support with coordinated donations that reflect families’ needs and the resources available.
- School uniforms: ready for a new school day.
Shirts, trousers, skirts, jumpers, cardigans, PE kit and suitable school shoes, agreed by size and school requirements. A uniform that fits can help a child feel ready to join in.Please offer clean, wearable items and tell us the sizes and any school branding. - Food: help put everyday meals within reach.
Useful cupboard staples such as pasta, rice, cereal, tinned vegetables, beans and other agreed foods. We aim to match donations with dietary needs and what families can use. Please offer unopened, labelled, in-date items. Arrange any fresh or chilled food with us in advance. - Hygiene and household care: dignity in the everyday.
Soap, shampoo, toothpaste, toothbrushes, period products, nappies and suitable cleaning or laundry products. These necessities deserve a place in every household budget.Toiletries and cleaning products should be unopened and in their original packaging. - Winter essentials: warmth for the colder days.
Coats, jumpers, scarves, hats, gloves and blankets. Practical warmth can help families feel more prepared for winter. Please offer clean items in good condition. Suitable sizes and current needs will be agreed before collection.
A little warmth. A little Christmas joy.
Christmas can bring extra pressure when a family is already counting every expense. We want to help make the season feel more manageable, with essential supplies, winter warmth and small thoughtful gifts where resources allow.
Individuals, workplaces and community groups can discuss organising a collection of agreed items, helping pack essentials bags or supporting the purchase of supplies families need. New books or age-appropriate gifts can also be discussed as part of a coordinated seasonal collection.
Help a parent feel supported. Help a child feel remembered.
Winter and Christmas collections are being developed. Accepted items, collection arrangements and dates will be confirmed with Little Lights before donations are delivered.
Give an item. Share a skill. Bring your team.
Little Lights contributes community connections, outreach, promotion, volunteer coordination and planning. We are seeking practical resources to help collect, organise and distribute support.

Kindness with a clear purpose.
Useful donations begin with understanding what families need and what we have the capacity to handle.
How will support reach families?
We aim to coordinate support through our community connections and partner referrals, matching available items with identified needs. Some programmes have eligibility requirements and limited capacity. Contact Little Lights for current arrangements.
How can supporters understand the impact?
For organised collections and funded activities, we can agree records of items received and distributed, families supported and progress updates. Any stories or photographs shared would require participants’ permission. National poverty figures are context, separate from our delivery results.
What should I do before donating items?
Email us with the items, quantities, sizes and condition. We will confirm what is currently needed and arrange collection or delivery. This helps ensure donations are useful and can be stored and distributed appropriately.
Be the kindness a family feels this winter.
Everyone is welcome to support Little Lights. Give an amount that feels right for you, offer suitable items or bring your time and skills. Together, we can help lighten the everyday load.
